Usually this error means the adapter can't work with full canbus protocol, but works with simplified OBD protocol (2 bytes packets instead of 7 bytes).
A good compromise between cost and quality is the Carista adapter, but consider that with it you can solve the connection issue only, after that you need to check if your engine is supported by the app.
